Combining Free Gift Discounts with Other Promotions


Promo Party creates automatic product discounts for your free gift promotions. By default, these discounts do not combine with other discounts, but you can enable combinations to let customers stack offers.


How Free Gift Discounts Work


When you create a free gift promotion in Promo Party, we generate an automatic product discount in Shopify that:

  • Applies to your designated gift products
  • Reduces their price to $0.00 when conditions are met
  • Shows up in your Shopify admin under Discounts


Default Behavior


Combinations are OFF by default. This means:

  • Customers get their free gift OR other discounts, not both
  • Shopify automatically applies the best discount for the customer
  • Most merchants prefer this to protect margins


Enabling Discount Stacking


When to Enable Combinations


Consider allowing combinations if you want customers to:

  • Get a free gift AND use a percentage-off code
  • Get a free gift AND receive free shipping
  • Stack multiple promotional offers during sales events


How to Enable


  1. Open your campaign in Promo Party
  2. Click Edit Campaign
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the campaign settings
  4. Find the Discount Combinations checkboxes
  5. Check the boxes for discount types you want to combine with:
  • ✓ Product discounts
  • ✓ Order discounts
  • ✓ Shipping discounts
  1. Save your campaign


The automatic discount in Shopify updates immediately.


Common Scenarios


Scenario 1: Free Gift + Order Code

Setup: Free tote bag at $50+ with order discount combinations enabled

Customer uses: 10% off code SAVE10

Result:

  • Free tote bag added at $50+ spend
  • 10% discount on all other items
  • Both promotions apply


Scenario 2: Free Gift Only (Default)

Setup: Free gift with all combination boxes unchecked

Customer tries: Adding any discount code

Result:

  • Shopify applies whichever saves more money
  • Usually the free gift wins
  • Code shows as "not compatible"


Important Limits


  • Maximum 25 automatic discounts active (including Promo Party gifts)
  • Customers can stack up to 5 product/order codes + 1 shipping code
  • Buy X Get Y products cannot receive additional discounts


Troubleshooting


"Discount couldn't be used with your existing discounts"

Customer sees this when trying incompatible codes. Solution:

  1. Edit your campaign
  2. Check the appropriate combination boxes at the bottom
  3. Save changes


Free Gift Not Appearing with Other Discounts

Check that:

  1. Combination checkboxes are selected in campaign editor
  2. Customer meets free gift threshold BEFORE other discounts apply
  3. You haven't hit the 25 automatic discount limit


Testing Your Setup

  1. Create a draft order in Shopify admin
  2. Add products to meet gift threshold
  3. Apply discount codes
  4. Verify both gift and discounts apply correctly


Best Practices


  • Keep it simple: Leave all boxes unchecked unless you need stacking
  • Be selective: Maybe allow order discounts but not product discounts
  • Communicate clearly: Tell customers whether offers combine
  • Monitor margins: Stacked discounts can erode profitability
  • Test first: Use draft orders before launching


Quick Reference


In your campaign editor, each checkbox enables combinations with:

  • Product discounts: Other automatic or code-based product discounts
  • Order discounts: Percentage or fixed amount off entire order
  • Shipping discounts: Free or reduced shipping offers


Check only what makes sense for your promotion strategy.
