How different discounts combine

Promo Party Pro makes your gift free with one automatic discount in Shopify. By default, that discount does not combine with other discounts. This article explains how to let customers use a discount code and still get their free gift.

How the free gift discount works

• Promo Party Pro creates one automatic discount in your Shopify admin under Discounts. All of your campaigns share it.
• It is a product discount. It takes 100% off one unit of each gift that Promo Party Pro added to the cart.
• It updates each time you save, create, or delete a campaign.

Don't edit or delete this discount in Shopify. Make all changes in Promo Party Pro.

Combinations are off by default

A new campaign does not combine with any other discount. If a customer enters a discount code that doesn't combine, Shopify applies only one of the two discounts. When that is the code, the gift is charged at full price.

Turning on combinations

1. Open your campaign in Promo Party Pro.
2. Find the Discount Combinations card, below Pop-up Settings.
3. Check the types your customers use:
4. • Combine with order discounts: codes for a percentage or amount off the whole order, like SAVE10
   • Combine with product discounts: discounts on specific products or collections
   • Combine with shipping discounts: free or reduced shipping
4. Save the campaign.

The discount code needs to allow it too

Combining works only when both discounts allow it. In your Shopify admin, go to Discounts, open the customer's code, and under Combinations turn on Product discounts. If either side doesn't allow combining, only one discount applies.

The setting applies to all your campaigns

Because all campaigns share one discount, a combination you turn on in any running campaign applies to every campaign's gift.

For example, if Campaign A allows order discounts and Campaign B doesn't, a SAVE10 code still combines with Campaign B's gift. To keep codes from combining with any gift, uncheck the box in every campaign.

Common setups

Free gift plus a 10% off code

• Campaign: Combine with order discounts checked
• Code SAVE10: combines with Product discounts
• Result: the customer gets 10% off and the gift stays free

Free gift plus free shipping

• Campaign: Combine with shipping discounts checked
• Free shipping discount: combines with Product discounts
• Result: free shipping and a free gift

Gift only (default)

• All boxes unchecked
• Result: a customer who enters a code gets either the code or the gift, not both

Testing your setup

Test on your storefront in a private (incognito) window. Add items until the gift appears, go to checkout, and enter the code. The gift line should stay at $0.

Draft orders created in the Shopify admin are not a reliable test. The gift is only free when Promo Party Pro adds it to the cart on your storefront.

Troubleshooting

"Discount couldn't be used with your existing discounts"

The code and the gift discount don't combine. Check the boxes in your campaign, and turn on Product discounts combinations on the code in Shopify.

The gift is charged after a code is applied

Same cause. Check both sides as described above. If combinations are set and the gift still isn't free, see the Quick Troubleshooting Guide.

Can a discount code unlock the gift?

Not yet. A customer can't trigger a gift by entering a code. See Things Promo Party Pro can't do yet for workarounds.
